The 2021 Oscar Nominees Are...

Here.

At 8 a.m. ET, the nominees for the 2021 Oscars were announced. I have a full list of the categories that I can comment on, but I did not include certain things like Live Action Short Film or Documentary Feature because I truly know nothing about them. I commented on Best Picture, bit nothing else, because I honestly have not seen most of these movies, just read stuff about them.

BEST PICTURE

The Father

Nomandland

Mank

Minari

Promising Young Woman

Judas and the Black Messiah

The Trial of the Chicago 7

Sound of Metal

These movies are, as usual, sweeping dramas. The Father is a family drama starring Anthony Hopkins. Nomadland is an adventure-drama with Frances McDormand. That seems to be the likeliest to win. Mank is a biographical drama about the screenwriter of one of Hollywood's most famous films, Citizen Kane. That's directed by David Fincher, who is one of my favorite directors of all time. I don't know anything about Minari. It's a family drama, but that's the limit of my knowledge. Promising Young Woman is one that I also don't know anything about.

Judas and the Black Messiah stars Daniel Kaluuya and Lakeith Stanfield, who are both extremely underrated actors. It's a biographical drama about the rise of the Black Panther party in the 1970s. The Trial of the Chicago 7 is a courtroom drama written and directed by Aaron Sorkin, one of the great screenwriters of all time. Sound of Metal is a drama about a drummer who begins to lose his hearing.

Like I said, Nomadland seems to be the favorite. Right behind it are Judas and The Trial of the Chicago 7. 2020-21 is a strange Oscar year. Most of these films aren't big names, because most were released straight to streaming.
